I'd have to put Susanna Kearsley's “The Winter Sea” as one of the top ones, though I also thoroughly enjoyed Lauren Willig's “The Ashford Affair.” Reply. Day and night we lived and breathed beside it, alongside its churning expanse of green, blue, grey. We breathed its salty air; our ears filled with the music of lapping waves and seagull cries. On her way, she drives by Slains Castle and feels an instant connection to it. In The Winter Sea, historical fiction author, Carrie McClelland visits her friend and agent in Scotland. The Winter Sea provides a lot of history as the story unfolds. Best work of historical fiction read recently…that's a tough one. I still can't keep all the nobles straight, but I do feel like I learned something about British history. When I read the synopsis for The Winter Sea I thought A) why not, I love a good historical fiction and semi-romance and B) hopefully it's not too similar to The Outlander series. Kearsley's novels is to actually read The Winter Sea first then dive into The Firebird. My recommendation for anyone unfamiliar with Ms. Lately, I'm noticing an exciting trend in women's fiction: historical tales framed within the context of a second, contemporary story. Trust me, you'll thank me if you do.
